Brazilian cellist Marina Martins is a young artist who captures her audience with sophistication, emotional intensity and technical mastery. She is the winner of the 2018 Young Soloist Competition of the São Paulo State Symphony Orchestra (OSESP) and recipient of the Eleazar de Carvalho Medal and thus performed as a soloist in two concerts with OSESP at Sala São Paulo in 2019.

In the pursuit of her development as a musician she has lived in different countries which helped her evolve into a versatile young cellist who is equally at ease playing diverse styles ranging from Bach to contemporary classical music. This multiple citizenship sculpted her intimacy with the musical cultures of the old and new worlds.

Born in 1999 in New Zealand, she started learning the cello at the age of three. Later Marina moved to her parents’ country Brazil and then music took her via the USA and England to Germany, where she studied with the cellist Pieter Wispelwey. Currently, she lives in Switzerland and is under the guidance of Danjulo Ishizaka at the Music Academy Basel.

Enthusiastic chamber musician, she has often been invited to Friedrichshafen to perform in chamber groups with the concertmaster of the London Philharmonic Orchestra, Pieter Schoeman. Marina has performed in prestigious venues such as Sala São Paulo and Mosteiro São Bento in São Paulo, Great Hall at Wills Memorial in Bristol, Lincoln Center in New York, Giovanni Arvedi in Cremona and Auditorium Manenti in Crema. Marina also performed at Accademia Musicale Chigiana - Siena, Cremona International Music Academy and Festival - Cremona, Orford Music Festival - Quebec, Musica Mundi International Chamber Music Festival - Waterloo and NCI – National Cello Institute – California.

In addition to her studies, Marina took masterclasses with protagonists of the international music scene such as Gary Hoffman, Gerard Caussé, Michael Kugel, Mark Churchill, Vladimir Perlin, Leonid Gorokhov, Jérôme Pernoo, Laurence Lesser and Antonio Meneses.

Marina plays on a Giuseppe Guarneri ‘filius Andreae’ cello generously loaned by a Private Collector.
